Field Officials

Field Referee
  • presides over all of the field events and ensures that the competitions are carried out in accordance with the rules (Rule 124.1).
  • supervises the measurement of records in field events (Rule 124.3).
  • warn or exclude any field competitor guilty of improper conduct (Rule 124.4).
  • deals with any protests regarding the conduct of field event competitions (Rule 124.4).
  • ensures the field of play is safe for competitors, officials and all other participants.
  • verifies competition results and delivers them to the competition secretary.

Jumping Events Officials

Jumps Referee
  • presides over the pole vault and high jump events and ensures that those competition are carried out in accordance with the rules (Rule 124.1).
  • ensures the field of play is safe for competitors, officials and all other participants.
  • checks all final results, signs the results cards and forwards them to the competition secretary (Rule 124.3).
  • warn or exclude any competitor guilty of improper conduct, using a yellow card for warnings and a red card for disqualifications (Rule 124.4).
  • deals with any protest regarding the conduct of competition (Rule 124.4).
  • allows athletes to leave the competiton area accompanied by a Judge ().

Vertical Jumps Chief

High Jump, Pole Vault

  • manages and supervises the event and ensures that the officials carry out their duties efficiently.
  • deals with any immediate oral protest against having an attempt judged as a foul, and be able to to have the attempt measured.
  • refers any disputes to the referee.
  • at the conclusion of the event, gives the result sheet to the Referee for verification.
  • confirms the height of the bar.
  • in the pole vault, checks the athletes' poles at the event site.

Athlete Control Judge

High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump, Triple Jump

  • calls each competitor by number, ensuring each athlete is ready to begin their trial.
  • checks each athlete's number when they are on the runway.
  • communicates with the Chief Judge any information, such as if the athlete is passing the attempt.
  • ensures that each athlete remains in the field of play.
  • issues run-up markers to the competitors.
  • for the Pole Vault, sets the Upright Indicator Board to the previously advised positioning for each competitor prior to the each competitor being called for their trial.

Bar Judge

High Jump, Pole Vault

  • adjusts and verifies the height and level of the crossbar (Rule 125.3).
  • indicates each successful jump by raising a white flag, and each unsuccessful trial by raising a red flag (Rule 125.3).
  • replaces the bar after each unsuccesful trial.
  • in the high jump, following a completed jump, places the cone in front of the landing area until it has been prepared for the next competitor, as indicated by the Jumps Chief.

Take-off Board Judge

Long Jump, Triple Jump

  • judges whether the take-off by an athlete is valid.
  • examines the plasticine board for evidence of a foul at the take-off.
  • in the triple jump, ensures that the competitor's jumping phases are in the correct sequence.
  • following a completed take-off, places a cone on the runway until the Jumps Chief indicates the landing area has been prepared for the next competitor.
  • once an athlete has exited the pit, indicates a valid trial by raising a white flag, and a foul by raising a red flag (Rule 125.3).

Pit Judge

Pole Vault

  • catches the pole vault after it is released by the competitor.
  • judges whether the plant of the pole and pit contact is valid.
  • places a cone on the runway after a completed jump until the Jumps Chief indicates the landing area has been prepared for the next competitor.
  • monitors poles during the competition for taping violations.

Long Jump, Triple Jump

  • watches the athlete's landing in the pit for rule infractions on landing and leaving the pit.
  • communicate to the Take-off Board Judge whether the athlete has correctly exited the pit.
  • places the marker in the precise position indicating the break in the sand closest to the take-off board to measure the jump.
  • indicate to the landing area assistants when the pit can be raked.

Jumps Recorder

  • manually records each trial, measurement and foul or pass, checking each competitor's number with the printed event list.
  • calculates the results at the conclusion of the events and passes the result sheet to the Chief.

Wind Gauge Operator

Long Jump, Triple Jump

  • ensures the gauge is place in accordance with the rules (Rule 135 and Rule 184.5).
  • records the wind velocity readings for five seconds from the 40m mark or from where the athlete begins his/her run.
